I was literally sitting here trying to think of a fun way to start this blog and impart our exciting news when I received this email:

I was wondering if you knew of a good "Daddy and me" type group that might be good for my husband. I wish he was getting all the good info and support that I have been getting :)

I’m not kidding; this just in!

Thanks Anne! That about sums up what I’ve heard over and over in my classes. “I wish my husband/partner could hear this!”

We strive to bring high level, mindfulness oriented, research based information to our classes but only half of our parents are benefiting, at least until now. Our dads are just as hungry for this information and support!

Speaking of research, it’s been documented that a large number of couples report decreased marital satisfaction after the birth of a baby. We also know that couples who communicate well and are able to negotiate ways to work together, have a much better chance of staying happy in their marriage. If moms and dads are discussing their experiences together in a supportive atmosphere, it can’t help but make sense that they will be better teammates in this challenging new adventure.

We also know that when we have had a “Dads Day” in a Mommy and Me class, it’s been an enormous success. Our dads love to see all the babies, sing silly songs and share stories and tips with other parents, just like moms do. There’s every reason to invite Dads in, to tell them what really goes on in Mommy and Me, so that they too can, as Anne put it so well, “get all the good info and support that I’ve been getting.”

Well, finally, the time has come. We are offering a Mommy and DADDY and Me Class at The Pump Station and Nurtury™ for the first time! The class will meet on Sundays from 12:00 – 1:30 and the first 8 – week session will begin soon!

Jane Rosen, PhD, who has extensive experience with moms, dads, babies and couples is very happy to be leading the class.

Are You Our 2013 Mom on a Mission?

Eight years ago, Tamara Rubin turned a major setback into an opportunity.

Her young boys were acutely poisoned after a contractor used unsafe and illegal paint removal methods while painting their home. Tamara decided that her family would not be a statistic and made it her mission to protect children across the country from lead poisoning. In 2011, she founded the Lead Safe America Foundation. You can still find her walking door-to-door, handing out free lead testing kits to families.

Then there’s Shelby Rodriguez. After discovering that a corporation in her community was pumping harmful, toxic fumes into the air during a tar-roofing project, she spearheaded a movement that successfully brought it to a halt. Today, she is a crusader for clean air.

We like to call it “the Erin effect,” in honor of our Advisory Board member, Erin Brockovich. The truth is: Deep inside all of us is a mom on a mission.

This year, we celebrate our 4th annual Mom on a Mission campaign to honor parents and moms like Tamara and Shelby who have made it their mission to create a better world for the next generation.

Each month we will honor one mom who is inspiring change for children’s health—beginning with our first finalist, Andrea Pett-Joseph, who has committed herself to finding a cure for Epidermolysis Bullosa, a rare, painful and life threatening genetic disorder of the skin that has affected her eight-year-old son since birth.

And Baby Makes Four? Could it be more different the second time around?

It was truly like night and day. When our firstborn, Lilly, came along, we didn’t dream of venturing out of the nest for at least a month. We sequestered ourselves with our teeny, tiny little human and marveled at her.

Fast forward to nine days after number two, little brother Zach came into the world. It was a cool January morning. While wearing Zach out at the beach playground, my husband and I chased after Lilly, who was running gleefully around. It simply wasn’t possible to keep this little bundle of toddler energy sequestered in the nest!

While walking at the playground, feeling dazed and tired, I ran into one of my mommy friends who had older children. She smiled warmly and asked how things were going. I chuckled, shook my head and confided, “I think I made a mistake...I think Lilly was meant to be an only child. She’s so used to having my undivided attention. We have such a special relationship and I just don't know how I'm going to make this work.” My friend put her hand on my shoulder and said, “It's going to be a hard year but you just gave your daughter the best gift ever.”

I held on to those words of advice during that challenging 1st year of Zach’s life. Being a second time mom is so different from being a first time mom. You have a certain confidence that makes it all so much easier and then there is the GUILT. What the guilt stems from is the simple fact that there is not enough of mom to go around. Not only does it feel like there’s not enough time and attention for the new baby, but inevitably there’s not enough for her older child, husband or herself. There’s always somebody crying, needing a nap, missing a class and it just feels endless. It’s just different the second time around but it’s also wonderful and so amazing.

Does any of this sound familiar? Well you’re not alone. The exciting news is that The Pump Station and Nurtury™ is now offering a Second Time Moms’ group based on the curriculum of our popular The Wright Mommy & Me™ classes. Second time mothers will have an opportunity to ease their transition through honest sharing and exploration. The group gives second time mothers a chance to raise concerns and look at issues in a safe space. The group will approach each topic and developmental stage from a mindful parenting perspective, which is essentially a slowed-down, less reactive, more intentional and reflective process. Some of the topics addressed will be:

• Helping your first child adjust to the new sibling
• Sharing practical information to help families raising more than one child
• Find new ways to improve your time management skills
• Make time for yourself and your relationship/partner
• Develop practical strategies for balancing work and home life
• Learn to feel good about yourself and your body
• Meet other second time moms in neighborhood!
• Explore ways to nurture the relationship between your children
• Review what you may have forgotten about baby care, sleep, food etc.

As a mom of a 6 year old daughter and 4 year old son I know about the joy and guilt that come with having two children. Some days are amazing as you watch your two children together and other days you will find yourselves sitting on the floor all crying together. I look forward to a group where mommies can develop new friendships, support each other and learn as they maneuver the challenges and joys of parenting a second child.

My friend at the park 4 years ago was absolutely right. My kids have a very special relationship. They care deeply for each other, play well together and have a hard time being away from each other. Despite the challenges, my husband and I did give Lilly the best gift ever – and it didn’t come from a store!

Flying with your Baby

Every week in our New Mother Support groups someone asks for tips on air travel with their breastfed baby. So here is a list of ideas that should make your trip easier. I hope this will also help my daughter Colleen when she travels home from Germany during the Christmas holidays with my soon-to-be-born grandbaby.

1. Make reservations early and book a window seat for yourself. It is easier to breastfeed when you can turn your back to the crowd and get the baby latched on, then sit back and relax.

2. If traveling with another person, request an aisle and window seat. If the flight is not full, you may get the whole row and if not, the person assigned the middle seat will happily take the aisle. You might try flying at lower volume times of the day/week. However, in the current travel climate there may be no such thing.

3. Take your Car Seat and your "Snap and Go" stroller right up to the plane and then gate check the stroller. It's waiting for you as you disembark. If there is an available seat you can take your car seat on the place with you. If not they will gate-check it too. If you don't have a gate-check bag, take large, heavy-duty bags and some masking tape. Covering the car seat and the stroller will protect them while in the cargo area.

4. Take your sling/baby carrier. This is great for walking through the airport, keeping your baby secure while flying, and calming a fussy baby on the plane – walking and bouncing. I just read the TSA website which states that babies need to be removed from carriers and strollers while going through the security checkpoint.

5. A SkipHop Backpack diaper bag will keep your hands available for the baby.

6. In your carry-on pack an extra shirt for yourself and enough diapers/clothes for the baby to make it through a “blowout” or two. Be prepared for a delay or even and unexpected overnight stay.

7. Pack one diaper and several wipes in a Ziploc bag (do a bunch). When you need to change the baby just grab a baggy, make the change and use the Ziploc for the dirty diaper.
Buy disposable changing pads and throw them away after each use. This helps to protect the baby from the environment.

8. Check the TSA website and take a copy of the rules with you – you may need it at security. Currently you may take breastmilk through security (when traveling with or without the baby) in larger quantities than three ounces and in a separate bag from other gels and liquids. You must declare that you have the milk and are encouraged to carry on only what is needed until you reach your destination. Any other milk that you want to take, can be packed in large Ziplocs, surrounded by ice cubes or blue ice and placed in the bags you plan to check.

9. Take your Bebe au Lait. This terrific cover-up allows mom and baby to see each other and nurse discreetly. Also try a Nursing tank top and layers; the tank makes nursing so easy while keeping your midsection covered. The tank is beloved by most of our clients.

10. Planes are flying "germ bags" so take a few antibacterial wipes in a baggy and wipe down the arms of your seat and the tray table and don't forget your hand sanitizer – use it frequently.

11. Try to nurse your baby or offer a few sips of breast milk by bottle when you are taking off and landing. Getting the baby to swallow helps reduce pressure in the ears. If the baby is sleeping, don’t wake him.

12. Put drops of breast milk in eyes and nose repeatedly before and during the trip. This may help reduce the risk of the baby getting sick. It works like an antibiotic/antiviral –Good Stuff.

** Ask for help: Getting your luggage through security, into the overheads, etc. can be a hassle. People feel good about themselves when they help others, so let 'um help.

Lisa Stern, MD

Lisa Stern, MD, has been a practicing pediatrician in Santa Monica for 18 years. She started her career with Harvey Karp at Pier Avenue Pediatrics and they joined Tenth Street Pediatrics in 1997. With seven pediatricians caring for patients 365 days per year, Tenth Street is the largest private practice in west Los Angeles. Lisa originally hails from NYC and attended Barnard College and New York Medical College. She came west to train in general pediatrics at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and then in pediatric hematology-oncology at UCLA. Along the way Lisa raised two wonderful daughters, one of whom is in college and one who is graduating from high school this year. In her free time, Lisa is an avid hiker, yogi, and skier. She is also dedicated to improving healthcare in Third World countries. This summer Lisa and her daughter volunteered at an orphanage in Kenya.

Rachel J. Kramer, MD, CLE
Teaching in Hollywood
A native of Los Angeles, Rachel Kramer is a Board Certified Pediatrician in private practice. She and her partners, Jerry Whitman, M.D., and Monique Araya, M.D., are one of the most well established pediatric offices in Beverly Hills. After completing her undergraduate education at UCLA, Rachel traveled to Israel where she completed her medical school studies at the University of Tel Aviv, graduating at the top of her class. In 2001, Rachel returned to Los Angeles to complete her General Pediatrics residency training at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where she was awarded Resident of the Year for her excellence in patient care, and the Neonatology Award for superior knowledge in the field of newborn medicine. During her residency, Rachel realized the great need in the community for breastfeeding knowledge amongst medical professionals. She created the lactation elective for pediatric residents at Cedars-Sinai, one which continues to this day. After completing her residency, Rachel received formal training in lactation through UCLA and became a Certified Lactation Educator. She is among a small handful of Southern California physicians who have this certification. Rachel is on staff at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where she is active in leadership in the Department of Pediatrics. She lives with her husband and three adorable daughters, ages 7, 4 and 1 in Los Angeles.

Tyler D. Krohn, MD
Teaching in Santa Monica and Hollywood
Tyler D. Krohn, MD is a board certified pediatrician caring for families on the Westside of Los Angeles. After graduating magna cum laude from Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and a focus on biomedical science and health care studies, he moved to Los Angeles to begin medical school. He received his Medical Doctorate from the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. He then began his career in pediatrics doing his internship and residency training at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, which has been ranked as one of the top 10 children’s hospitals in the United States and the best children’s hospital on the West Coast (Source: US News & World Report). After his tenure at Children's Hospital, he joined UCLA-Santa Monica Pediatrics and served as an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles. In August 2011, he decided to open his own small private pediatrics practice, which is currently located in Pacific Palisades. In addition to his own practice, he serves the community by working part-time in the emergency room at Providence Little Company of Mary in Torrance and the urgent care clinic at Cedars-Sinai in Beverly Hills. He and his wife Kendall live in Brentwood with their daughter Elliot and two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Henry and Jack.

Lisa Hauselman is a board certified pediatrician and founding partner of Premier Pediatrics Beverly Hills. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Lisa wanted to explore the East Coast and earned her undergraduate degree in History and English at the University of Pennsylvania. She then moved to New York City to attend Columbia University's post baccalaureate program in pre-medical studies. Upon returning home, Lisa attended medical school at UCLA School of Medicine, graduating with honors. Nothing made her father, Dr. Stephen Shapiro (former Chief of Surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center), more proud than to walk his daughter down the aisle at her medical school graduation. She continued in her father's footsteps by completing her residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the same hospital her father had trained at 30 years before. Lisa lives with her husband Nick and two beautiful children: Sophie (7) and Moses (4) who continue to make her a better pediatrician every day with their love and support.

Monique F. Araya, MD, FAAP
Teaching in Hollywood
A native of Los Angeles, Monique Araya is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a Board Certified Pediatrician in private practice. She and her partners, Jerry Whitman, M.D., and Rachel Kramer, M.D., are one of the most well established pediatric offices in Beverly Hills. After completing her undergraduate education at UC Davis, Monique continued her education overseas and then in New Jersey. In 2000, Monique completed her Pediatric Residency in Cleveland, Ohio at Case Western Reserve University Hospitals. She moved to San Luis Obispo, CA in 2001 where she began her career as a General Pediatrician. She established an mediated an educational forum in San Luis Obispo for Pediatricians to discuss medical studies and patient cases to improve both knowledge and patient care. In 2006 Monique moved back to Southern California and joined the staff of Cedars Sinai Medical Center. At her private practice breastfeeding is supported and encourage by her partners as well as her staff, including two nurses who are educators trained in lactation. She has two young children and has spent the last ten years enjoying watching all of the children in her life learn and grow.

Dr. Peter Antall, MD
Teaching in Westlake Village
Dr. Peter Antall, MD is a general pediatrician and a partner at Conejo Children’s Medical Group in Thousand Oaks. Peter grew up in both Cleveland, Ohio and Boston, MA. He attended George Washington University School of Medicine, completed his residency at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, and then completed one year of fellowship in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at Stanford University. Peter is a full time practicing general pediatrician but has many other professional interests. Peter has been chief of pediatrics at Los Robles Hospital, he has created and currently manages the ER pediatrician program at Los Robles, and he has developed a smartphone app called Pocket Pediatrician. Peter is also the Pediatric Medical Director at Specialists On Call, a telemedicine company based in Westlake Village. Peter is an avid bicyclist and lives in Westlake Village with his wife, three daughters, and a multitude of pets.

Dr. Carla Tahan, MD

Teaching in Westlake Village

Dr. Carla Tahan is a Board Certified Pediatrician and member of the AAP who has been practicing general pediatrics for 17 years. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from UCLA and pursued graduate studies in Public Health with an emphasis in health education. She also spent some time teaching in the Los Angeles and Fresno Unified School Districts. She went on to get her medical degree from George Washington University and completed her pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. In 1999, Dr. Tahan started her own private practice in Oak Park in association with Dr. Andrew Matthew. She currently lives in West Hills with her husband and her two children, Michael (10 yrs) and Christina (8 yrs).

Dr. Betsy Weisz, MD

Teaching in Westlake Village

Dr. Betsy Weisz graduated from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1979 and received her MD from Albany Medical College four years later. While in medical school, Dr. Weisz met her future husband, Dr. Russell Spadaro. The two then did their pediatric training together at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. After residency Dr. Weisz worked for CIGNA Healthcare in the San Fernando Valley where she eventually became the Chairman of the Pediatric Department as well as the Pediatric Department Head at Medical Center of North Hollywood. In 2001 Dr. Weisz joined the staff of North Oaks Pediatrics. In April 2008 Dr. Weisz became a founding partner at Oak Tree Pediatrics and More. Dr. Weisz is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She is an active member at Los Robles Hospital and is currently the Chairman of the Pediatric Dept and the Vice-Chair of the Credentials Committee. She is also bilingual in English and Spanish.

Rebecca DiMundo, MD

Teaching in Santa Monica

Rebecca DiMundo, MD, is a Pediatrician and owner of a small private practice in Santa Monica. She attended medical school at Keck USC School of Medicine, then completed residency in Pediatrics at L.A. County - USC Women's and Children's Hospital in Los Angeles. After graduation she spent 5 years working with the National Health Service Corps bringing medical care to underserved communities along the Texas - Mexico border and in the Central Valley of California before returning to her hometown of Los Angeles. She lives with her husband and 3 children.

Noel Salyer, M.D.,
Teaching in Santa Monica
a board certified pediatrician, was born and raised in Santa Monica, CA. She earned her undergraduate degree from University of California, Los Angeles and then completed her medical degree at University of California, Davis. She stayed in Northern California and did her pediatric residency at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford University. She also has an interest in international medicine and has spent time in Africa on several medical mission trips.
After completing her training, she moved back home and joined Pacific Ocean Pediatrics in 2010. She is excited to be working at POP alongside her father, Dr. Robert Hamilton.
She and her husband Kyle live in Santa Monica with their two small children, Nathan and Emery.

Dr. Sonya Sethi Gohill
Teaching in Westlake Village
Dr. Sonya Sethi Gohill is the proud owner of Brentwood Pediatrics, a small private pediatrics office in Brentwood. "Dr. Sonya" grew up in Los Angeles, and attended Stanford University, where she graduated with distinction. She then attended medical school at UCLA, and stayed there for residency. She has been in private practice since 2002, and opened her own office in June, 2010. She is also trained as a certified lactation educator. Dr. Sonya lives in Santa Monica with her husband and two sons, Dilan (5) and Jaiden (2).

Administrative Support to the Executive Assistant:

Maintaining databases, order records, contacts, etc.
Miscellaneous projects such as preparing shipments to tradeshows
Maintaining published articles and press kits
Supporting and promoting an understanding of our mission (reviewing books, DVD’s and all materials to become familiar with message) in day-to-day contact with accounts, distributors, media, general public, etc.

Required Skills:

Excellent writing abilities, phone etiquette, follow-up skills, and organization.

After a painstaking five years, the child was luckily found unharmed. Babyproofing Your Marriage: The Mom’s Perspective

“Ever since we had our baby, we’ve been fighting so much more. Is there something wrong with us?”
Having a baby is joyous, yet research shows that 70% of couples experience increased conflict and marital dissatisfaction in the first 3 years post-baby, regardless of how well they were doing before children. This points to the fact that many of the sources of stress are often due to profound role changes rather than an indication that there’s something wrong with the relationship. When you combine hormonal changes, sleep deprivation, struggles over division of labor, strained finances, and almost no time to be alone together, you can see why having a baby puts such a strain on relationships.

However, here’s the good news! There are research-proven techniques that can help you maintain intimacy and connection and work through conflicts constructively. As a Marriage and Family Therapist and a Mommy and Me Leader at The Pump Station, I teach moms and couples these tools.

In my upcoming hot topic lecture, you’ll learn about “soft start-up,” a way to bring up an issue to maximize your chance of actually being heard. Research shows that the way a conflict goes is determined by how it starts 96% of the time!

Also, we’ll explore the male/female differences at the heart of many post-baby conflicts and I’ll teach you how to set your partner up for success, which leads to more mutual understanding. You’ll learn how to fight constructively, when to take a break and how to make repair.

In addition to communication skills, babyproofing your marriage also requires making proactive, structural changes in your new post-baby life. These tools will include:
•    how to help your partner understand what it is you do all day
•    how to create a new division of labor that keeps you out of the role of boss or nag
•    how to make room for intimacy when you’re feeling touched out from constant caretaking

Turn Clocks Back Sunday, November 6 : Prepare Baby

Jill Spivack, LCSW and Jennifer Waldburger, LCSW of Sleepy Planet offer their expert advice on how to ensure the time shift fo Daylight Savings goes as smoothly as possible for babies, toddlers and older kids:

For Babies
1. Put your child to sleep as his normal bedtime on Saturday night.

2. Your child will likely wake up 1 hour earlier by the new clock than he normally does, say at 5:00 AM (which still feels to him like 6:00 AM). Psychologically, it can be painful to see 5:00 AM on your clock and deal with a child who's bright and perky. There's not a lot you can do about his energy level on this first morning, so just get up with him.

3. If your child still naps, stretch him as much as you can toward his normal first nap time (according to the current clock). So, if your child wakes at 5:00 AM (according to the current clock), his body will want to nap 1 hour earlier than normal. Don't let him! Instead, do whatever it takes to keep him awake. Give him a bath or do the Hokey Pokey around the house to keep him up as close to his normal first nap time as possible, then follow his usual schedule thereafter. Don't let him nap too long, as doing so may continue to cause early morning wakings.

If your child has outgrown napping, you still need to allow him to wake up at the early new time once the clocks have changed (bummer). However, spend your day eating and doing activities according to the usual time (even thought the clock has changed). Do your best to keep him up all the way to his regular bedtime at night, by the new clock (or as chttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.giflose as you can get without breaking him). Yes, he'll be a bit cranky in the evening temporarily, but after a few days, he'll adjust!

Instructions for Resetting Good Nite Lite for Daylight Savings

We love the Good Nite Lite which has been featured on The Doctors, CBS Health Watch and The View. We know daylight savings time can be a hassle, changing the clocks in the kitchen on all the walls and even in your car. We hope the video and information below will help make one change a little easier. The video is directly from Good Nite Lite.

To Set the Current Time:

1. Press and hold (for 2 seconds) then release the right/set button. The screen will illuminate brightly and display the default time of 10AM* (default times may vary on some models).

2. Press and hold the left/select button until the time flashes. Use the toggle/mode switch to adjust the time up and down for the minutes and then for the hours. Use the left/select button to move between hours and minutes.

3. Once the current time appears on the screen, press and hold the left/select button until the numbers stop flashing to "set" your time.

To Set the Sleep Time (time you would like the moon to illuminate):

1. Push and hold down the toggle/mode lever until you see the moon icon and the default sleep time of 7PM* blinking on the screen.

2. Use the toggle/mode switch to adjust the time up and down for the minutes and then for the hours. Use the left/select button to move between hours and minutes.

3. Once your Sleep Time appears on the screen, press and hold the left/select button until the current time appears. Your Sleep Time is set.

To Set the Wake-Up Time (time you would like the sun to illuminate):

1. Push and hold up the toggle/mode level until you see the sun icon and the default wake time of 7AM* blinking on the screen.

2. Use the toggle/mode switch to adjust the time up and down for the minutes and then for the hours. Use the left/select button to move between hours and minutes.

3. Once your Wake-Up Time appears on the screen, press and hold the left/select button until the current time appears. Your Wake-Up Time is set.

Once you have the three times programmed (Current, Sleep & Wake Up), plug your light into the outlet.

If at any time you unplug the light and turn the switch to the "off" position your light will revert to the factory settings and you will need to reset your personalized times.

*The Default time may vary on some models

*Your backlight only illuminates for a few seconds before you need to start to set your clock. If the screen darkens, press/hold/release the right button once again to "wake" the timer.

Dimming Feature:

An optional dimming mode is available to further dim your Good Nite Lite. To activate this option press and hold the SET button for 2/3 seconds to illuminate the indicator in the top right corner. To de-activate this option press the SET button again until the indicator no longer appears.

Great Green Halloween Play Date Dough

Recipe for Great Green Halloween Play Date Dough

Mix Dry Ingredients
- 2 cups of flour
- 1 cup of salt
- 1 tsp of cream of tartar
Add: 2 tbsp of vegetable or canola oil, stir
Add: 2 cups of boiling Water and mix away
(we recommend using and electric mixer)
Add: Coloring and mix further

Once complete knead in spices to add your special flavors. We used cinnamon, ginger, vanilla, lemongrass and other fun stuff from the kitchen.

These are my little monsters. Don’t be scared!!! We made them from milk cartons, filled them with shredded paper, and hid some things inside like plastic bottles with shells so they have a cool sound…and then Duck Tape. My mom and dad taught me how to do things like this when I was little, reuse it, repair it, or refashion it. My childhood in rural Pennsylvania looks very different than my son’s childhood in New York City, his big back yard is one of several glorious parks shared with millions of people. We share our home with our community, too! As a family daycare provider, my goal is to “support the art of parenting in the greenest ways possible.” Our playroom is filled with toys that are eco-responsible, and these “Milk Blocks” are a big favorite among my kids.

The Great Green Play Date for a Cause is our way of sharing our ideas and what we have learned as green explorers and creators. Healthy Child, Healthy World, our cause, has been a trusted guide. Their website and book are a reference and news source for me as I “vote with my dollars” to support green efforts in the marketplace. Every mom, no matter how much or how little she has to spend has a vote. What’s really scary, as we prepare for Halloween, is how many monsters attack our kids in the form of artificial colors and flavors, GMOs , pesticides, herbicides, cheap, plastic toys, mounds of trash post-holiday. Making good choices is too often feels like a choice between two “evils.”

Our partnership with Green Halloween® has revealed dozens of safe, green, healthy ideas and inspires more daily as other parents, teachers, entrepreneurs and advocates creatively change the way we celebrate this tradition to be in harmony with our planet. The Mothers' Milk Bank of California, located at Valley Medical Center in San Jose, CA, is a licensed tissue bank that has been providing milk banking services for over 30 years. Introducing our NEW Twins Mommy and Me Class

Here’s what I didn’t KNOW until my calm and delighted OB told me he saw two tiny little heart beats! I remember thinking, “Oh God, my baby has two hearts??” When I caught up, I remember looking at my husband and seeing a red, giddy panic in his face. I giggled, in a hysterical, crazy-woman sort of way and felt a new and strange exhilaration. I didn’t know ANYTHING about twins!

What I know now, is that this was just the start of a very different kind of parenting experience. From the raging pregnancy appetite and extra special heartburn to the mind-numbing and scary bedrest, the research and hiring of nighttime help to the nursing for two, bonding and attaching to two, bathing two, soothing two, and feeding two. NOW I KNOW and I’d love to share this with you!

I’m so excited to tell you that The Pump Station & Nurtury™ and The Wright Mommy and Me Groups will be offering a new Mommy and Me class specifically for TWINS! Based on the great curriculum of Julie Wright’s popular groups, this class will also offer specific emotional support and practical guidance for the rewarding but challenging task of caring for more than one baby. Differing a bit from other popular twin mommy and me groups, our group will approach each topic and developmental stage from a mindful parenting perspective, which is essentially a slowed-down, less reactive, more intentional and reflective process. Some of the topics addressed will be:

• getting and keeping your babies on a similar schedule

• feeding two hungry babies

• the blessings and complications of bonding with two babies

• temperament and nurturing individuality

• partner issues

• double the blessing/more than double the work: finding and accepting help and support

In addition to the camaraderie and understanding you will find among other twin moms, you will have special time singing and attuning to your babes at the beginning of each class. Additionally, because our class is 90 minutes, which is 30 minutes longer than some other classes for twins, we will always have time for new mommy questions!

As a mom of 3 year old twin boys as well as a 9 year old boy, I know firsthand about the unique experience of parenting twins. Not only are you a new parent, but you’ve got two little people to contend with. Some days and moments are pure joy and exhilaration, others...not so much. It’s HARD work! As parents of twins we are incredibly lucky to have two little human beings to nurture and love, but the parenting experience is complicated by many factors that singleton parents can’t understand. So, come be with your people and build friendships, learn, and nurture you attachment to each of your little babies.

Molly Schaffer is a psychotherapist in private practice, working with children and families. Molly trained in the esteemed Mindful Parenting program at the Maple Center in Beverly Hills and with the Center for Reflective Parenting in West LA. Molly is also the mom to twin almost 3 year old boys and a 9 year old boy.

Preparing for Emergencies: What breastfeeding moms should know

If you've looked at a newspaper or turned on the TV you know a hurricane headed up the East Coast.

We can't rarely be sure how dangerous or destructive any storm will be, but it doesn't hurt to be prepared for the worst-case scenario: extended power outages, unexpected time away from home, or being stuck at home unable to leave.

Many breastfeeding moms rely on electric pumps, refrigerators, and freezers. If that sounds like you, review the checklist below and be sure you're prepared for Hurricane Irene.

Keep a cooler of dry ice on hand just in case your electricity goes out and you have frozen milk stored in your freezer.
If you can't get dry ice, fill up your ice trays or have two bags of ice in a cooler. Keep it near an air conditioning vent or unit while the power is still on to keep the ice cold.
If your electricity goes out, do not open the door, which will let the cool air out. If you have to open the door do it as quickly as you can.
Remember even in non-emergency situations to keep your frozen milk in the back of the freezer (not in the freezer door). It stays frozen and colder in the back around other frozen items. Partially thawed milk cannot be refrozen.
Have extra batteries on hand in case your electricity goes out and you need to use your pump.
Familiarize yourself with hand expression in case you don't have batteries and need to pump. Remember that the baby is the best way to remove your milk, so even if you are predominantly a pumper and breastfeed sporadically in an emergency situation, you should focus on feeding the baby on demand. You can also use a manual pump.
If you need to be away from your baby and a disaster is imminent, be sure to leave extra expressed milk with their caretaker. If you are caught in traffic or can't get to your baby immediately the baby can still be fed with your milk. Always leave more milk than you think your baby will need (two extra feedings worth, at least). Keep your pump with you to ensure that your body is not getting the signal to make less milk.
If a mom is not breastfeeding and she finds herself with no formula or access to clean water, it is possible for a mom to relactate. Her milk was there in the beginning when she gave birth, and she will have to initiate by attempting and/or feeding every two to three hours to trigger the milk to let down. It will not be immediate, but your supply will return.

Stay safe and dry! And be sure to share this list with your breastfeeding friends.

Vasospasm of the Nipple - Raynauds Phenomenon

Raynaud's phenomenon is a term used to describe intermittent loss of blood flow to some extremities due to a spasm in the blood vessels (vasospasm). The most commonly affected areas are the fingers and toes, but it can affect the nipples as well. The constriction of blood flow causes a loss of color and severe pain. Raynaud’s phenomenon is known to occur in up to 22% of otherwise healthy women of childbearing age, and is now recognized by many lactation experts as a treatable cause of painful breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding women with Raynaud's phenomenon experience debilitating nipple pain that usually follows the feeding (although it can occur during the feeding) and may last for hours. When the warm mouth of the baby comes off the breast, the face of the nipple, or part of the nipple, will blanch white and burning pain begins. The nipple can go through several color changes (white, blue, red) and the entire breast may throb. Poor positioning and poor latch may cause nipple damage, nipple blanching and pain, and are thought by some to trigger the problem. However, the symptoms of Raynaud's phenomenon can occur even without improper breastfeeding techniques and nipple damage. Not all nipple vasospasm is Raynaud’s Phenomenon and may fully resolve if the latch can be improved and the damage healed. Exposure to cold is also a known trigger in Raynaud's phenomenon.

Treatment Options include the following:

If your nipples are sore and damaged, make an appointment to see a lactation professional who can evaluate your latch technique and help you to improve it.

Prevent or decrease any cold exposure to your breasts. Heat will usually stop the vasospasm, which will increase blood flow to the nipples and help alleviate the pain.
- Cover breasts and keep them warm. Even your warm hands can help.
- While nursing, keep the opposite breast covered and warm.
- Wear hand warmers inside your bra when going out into cold air.
- Use dry heat when experiencing pain. Try a hair dryer or heating pad to warm breasts. Wet, warm compresses will help during use, but when removed, evaporation will occur causing cooling, and the pain can start again.
- Massage olive oil, warmed between your fingers, into the nipple when it is burning. Press forward from the base of the nipple which helps blood flow forward into the nipple.

Don’t smoke. Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor and can increase episodes.

Avoid caffeine and other stimulants. Check labels to make sure soft drinks don’t contain caffeine.

Avoid vibration. Use a good quality breast pump that has a smooth, comfortable action.

Reduce stess. Try a post partum yoga class, a few minutes of meditation or a little nap when the baby is sleeping. Let others help with cooking and chores if at all possible.

Medication:

Nifedipine. (one 30 mg., long-acting tablet/daily). This prescriptive medication is a calcium channel blocker and vasodilator used in the treatment of high blood pressure. It has been shown to be very effective in quickly relieving the pain of Raynaud’s phenomenon and might be the best course of treatment. Very little of this medication enters the milk so it is considered by the American Academy of Pediatrics to be a safe option for breastfeeding women. Call your primary care physician or your obstetrician to discuss. Try Nifedipine for two weeks; if the pain returns you can go back on the medication.

Vitamin B6. Take 100-200 mg daily for 4 days, then 25 mg/day from then on. If pain free for 2 weeks, try weaning off altogether.

Fish Oil has been helpful to some women. A recent study suggests that a higher than usual dose (perhaps 12 g daily) is required to get results. Check with your physician.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.

Name of Product: "metoo" Clip-on Chair

Units: 54,000 (these were the subject of a product safety alert issued May 6, 2011)

Importer: phil&teds USA Inc, of Fort Collins, Co.

Hazard: Missing or worn clamp pads allow the chairs to detach from a variety of different table surfaces, posing a fall hazard. In addition, when the chair detaches, children's fingers can be caught between the bar and clamping mechanism, posing an amputation hazard. Also, user instructions for the chairs are inadequate, increasing the likelihood of consumer misuse.

Incidents/Injuries: phil&teds and CPSC have received 19 reports of the chairs falling from different table surfaces, including five reports with injuries. Two reports of injuries involved children's fingers being severely pinched, lacerated, crushed or amputated. The three other reports of injury involved bruising after a chair detached suddenly and a child struck the table or floor.

Description: The product is an infant/toddler chair with a nylon fabric seat and a metal frame that clamps onto tables using two metal vise clamps. The upper part of each clamp rests on the table top and has either a rubber pad on its underside or a rubber boot covering the clamp. The chair is sold in three fabric colors - red, black and navy. Chairs subject to this recall do not have black plastic spacers between the cross bar and the clamps.

Sold through: Buy Buy Baby, Target, Toys R Us and their online sites; philandteds.com; Amazon.com; other online retailers; and a variety of independent juvenile specialty stores from May 2006 to May 2011 for between $40 and $50.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the product and contact the company to receive a free repair kit and revised user instructions. Consumers who previously received a repair kit with only rubber boots should also stop using the chair and contact the company for the new repair kit.

Our Pediatrician Panel

Dr. Peter Antall is a general pediatrician and a partner at Conejo Children’s Medical Group in Thousand Oaks. Peter grew up in both Cleveland, Ohio and Boston, MA. He attended George Washington University School of Medicine, completed his residency at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, and then completed one year of fellowship in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at Stanford University. Peter is a full time practicing general pediatrician but has many other professional interests. Peter has been chief of pediatrics at Los Robles Hospital, he has created and currently manages the ER pediatrician program at Los Robles, and he has developed a smartphone app called Pocket Pediatrician. Peter is also the Pediatric Medical Director at Specialists On Call, a telemedicine company based in Westlake Village. Peter is an avid bicyclist and lives in Westlake Village with his wife, three daughters, and a multitude of pets.

Dr. Carla Tahan is a Board Certified Pediatrician and member of the AAP who has been practicing general pediatrics for 17 years. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from UCLA and pursued graduate studies in Public Health with an emphasis in health education. She also spent some time teaching in the Los Angeles and Fresno Unified School Districts. She went on to get her medical degree from George Washington University and completed her pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. In 1999, Dr. Tahan started her own private practice in Oak Park in association with Dr. Andrew Matthew. She currently lives in West Hills with her husband and her two children, Michael (10 yrs) and Christina (8 yrs).

Betsy Weisz graduated from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1979 and received her MD from Albany Medical College four years later. While in medical school, Dr. Weisz met her future husband, Dr. Russell Spadaro. The two then did their pediatric training together at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles.

After residency Dr. Weisz worked for CIGNA Healthcare in the San Fernando Valley where she eventually became the Chairman of the Pediatric Department as well as the Pediatric Department Head at Medical Center of North Hollywood. In 2001 Dr. Weisz joined the staff of North Oaks Pediatrics. In April 2008 Dr. Weisz became a founding partner at Oak Tree Pediatrics and More.

Dr. Weisz is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Sonya Sethi Gohill is the proud owner of Brentwood Pediatrics, a small private pediatrics office in Brentwood. "Dr. Sonya" grew up in Los Angeles, and attended Stanford University, where she graduated with distinction. She then attended medical school at UCLA, and stayed there for residency. She has been in private practice since 2002, and opened her own office in June, 2010. She is also trained as a certified lactation educator. Dr. Sonya lives in Santa Monica with her husband and two sons, Dilan (5) and Jaiden (2).

Bob Hamilton, M.D. is a pediatrician who has practiced in the Santa Monica area for the past 27 years. He is a graduate of UCLA's School of Medicine and did his pediatric internship and residency at UCLA as well, serving as Chief Resident during his final year of training. Dr. Hamilton is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at UCLA and has served as President of the Los Angeles Pediatric Society. He is the father of 6 children and has 3 grandchildren.

He enjoys gardening, biking and reading and leads medical mission teams to Africa twice each year. He is the founder of Pacific Ocean Pediatrics and practices with Jenna Roberts, M.D. and his daughter, Noel Salyer, M.D.

Tyler D. Krohn, M.D. is currently a pediatrician at Santa Monica Pediatrics and an assistant clinical professor of pediatrics at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles. His partners include renowned pediatricians Marshall Sachs, Dennis Woo, Sharon Kaminker, and Chiaki Jutabha and their group is one of the oldest and most well-respected pediatrics practices on the Westside of Los Angeles. After graduating magna cum laude from Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and a focus on biomedical science and health care studies, he moved to Los Angeles where he received his Medical Doctorate from the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. He then began his career in pediatrics doing his internship and residency training at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, which has been ranked as one of the top 10 children’s hospitals in the United States and the best children’s hospital on the West Coast (Source: US News & World Report). He has spent time in the leadership of the American Academy of Pediatrics and has conducted research in the area of cystic fibrosis, which is an area of particular interest to him. He and his wife live in Brentwood with their two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Henry and Jack, and they are currently expecting their first child.

A Documentary project in Chicago, IL by Ryan Comfort & Laura Zinger

About this Project:

We are Ryan & Laura, part of a 5-person crew traveling across the country in a 40-foot pink bus to learn about the landscape of breastfeeding across America. Within two weeks, we have already heard hundreds of moving personal stories and met many organizations that are taking action to empower breastfeeding moms.

We are seeking funding to turn the amazing footage we are capturing into a feature-length documentary that will challenge the way America thinks about and supports breastfeeding moms.

What are two single people with no kids doing promoting breastfeeding?

Independently, we had both stumbled onto the topic of breastfeeding and began to develop projects around it: Laura as a documentary filmmaker, Ryan as a social entrepreneur. Since then, we have both been active observers, delving deeply into the world of being a breastfeeding parent and the challenges that new moms face. We are both determined to use our respective skill sets to help the breastfeeding movement further empower moms to reach their personal breastfeeding goals.

Interactive Documentary? What does that mean?

The world knows that the best documentaries cause people to think, ask questions and feel something strongly. Well, we want to take it one step further and cause people to take action. The documentary will be accompanied by a website that documentary watchers will be able to visit to learn how they can help empower moms, based on what we learn during our cross-country road trip.

You really think a documentary and website can create social change?

As outsiders with big, crazy ideas (40 feet big!), we’ve been able to engage with national leadership and learn how prominent organizations are working tirelessly to empower moms to reach their breastfeeding goals. And through the bus tour, we will be spending time with thousands and thousands of people in over 30 cities on a grassroots level. Piecing together these stories and everyone’s energy in a collaborative way, via a fun, engaging, nonjudgmental website that will further mobilize the breastfeeding community and increase its impact. Once we get the support community in one place, new moms will never have to feel alone nor unsupported ever again! The documentary will play a key role in raising awareness about breastfeeding and all the support that is available.

It’s working already!

A highlight of the bus trip, after only one week, came when we were in Portland parked outside a grocery store. A dad saw the 40-foot bus and came up to ask how much longer we would be there. Within an hour, he returned with his wife and their newborn. While they had had a positive start with breastfeeding, the past few days had been challenging and the mother was becoming very frustrated. The mom was able to receive help from a Board-Certified Lactation Consultant on the spot, as well as learn about all the local (and many of which were free) resources in her area that could help her succeed. We could see her body language go from stressed to feeling relaxed as she felt supported. By creating a community where everyone comes together, these kinds of interactions can happen thousands of times a day. We want to put an end to mothers feeling alone and unsupported during their breastfeeding journeys, — there is no need for that, because the breastfeeding community is passionate, large, and ready to provide love and support to anyone who needs it!

Safety is a top priority for every parent. When it comes to sleep, giving your baby a safe sleep environment is extremely important, but even the best caregivers can overlook small things that can have serious risks.

Whether you're a first-time parent or you’ve faced these questions before, here are some safety guidelines to keep in mind so you can provide your baby with the ideal sleep environment:

Mattress and sheets - Place your baby in a safety-approved crib with a firm mattress. When selecting a mattress for the crib, a firmer option is preferred over one that is too soft and flexible. Make sure that the mattress fits securely in the crib. You should not be able to fit more than two fingers between the mattress and the crib side. A quality, firm mattress will help keep your child sleeping safely and comfortably.

Bonus tip: Before purchasing a crib, visit www.cpsc.gov to make sure the crib you selected has not been recalled.

In addition to a firm mattress, the crib sheet should fit snug so it stays put when your baby is in the crib. A sheet that is too loose may be a suffocation hazard.

Keep clutter out of crib - For most parents, all those cute stuffed animals and soft blankets might seem a natural fit for the crib, but unfortunately they all pose suffocation risks.

Raising Lifetime Readers from the Start

After seeing 18-month-old child prodigy Elizabeth Barrett read flashcards on The Today Show, many parents asked me what they could do to help their children acquire similar skills and get the same thrill out of reading.

Experts say that most children learn to read between the ages of six and seven and it is not beneficial to try to push a child to read before then. In fact, one of the most damaging things you can is to create pressure for her to read – a negative association between your child and reading.

There is, however, one simple and inexpensive thing you can do which will guarantee an uptick in your child's reading success: reading aloud, which parents can even start while their child is in utero. This is also an excellent bonding ritual with other beneficial elements for both parent and child.

Most important is the positive association between reading and pleasure. It can last a lifetime.

The single best predictor of language acquisition is the number and quality of words a child is exposed to each day. Reading has the added benefit of exposing children to "rare words," complex sentences, literary devices like alliteration and rhyming, descriptive language and original synonyms and story conventions (i.e. "in a land far, far away"). According to Betty Bardige and Marilyn Segal, authors of Building Literacy with Love, "children who have lots of experience with books are likely to develop richer vocabularies and deeper understanding of the meanings, sounds and uses of words than those with less literary experience. They are also likely to be familiar with the conventions of language and story form."

The study results very clearly show that reading makes a world of difference in achievement.

It Starts at Home
It is up to parents to create enthusiastic readers. Studies show that children who come from what researchers call a "print-rich environment" consistently score better in writing, reading and math skills than those from "print-poor environments." Print, in this case, relates to a wide variety of materials, including: books, magazines, newspapers and even comic books. When researchers examined 21 kindergarten classes to see who displayed high interest in reading and who showed low interest in reading it became clear that the home environment and parents' reading habits are crucial factors. Of the high interest group, over 78 percent had mothers who read for leisure, 60 percent had fathers who read for leisure, more than 98 percent of the kids were taken to the library and more than 76 percent were read to daily.

Book ownership is a significant factor in reading enthusiasm and achievement. Children need to have books that they own, ones that they can put their name in and don't have to share with siblings. As they get older they should be able to mark up books by writing in margins, highlighting and earmarking pages. This allows kids to learn new words, come back to passages that intrigue them and make the reading experience their own.

Start reading to your child right away. Children, even infants, are never too young for a picture book. Attention span is a learned process. Infant reading studies show that most infants average a three-minute attention span. However, like exercising a muscle, those who are read to regularly can have an attention span as long as 30 minutes a day.

Be a role model. Children read more when they see other people reading. There is a direct correlation between how often children read for leisure and how often their parents do.

Create reading rituals. Create regular times in your children's day when you read to them. My daughters look forward to hearing two books after every meal while they are still in their chairs. We started this ritual as soon as they were able to use a highchair. Many parents use nap or bedtime for a reading ritual.

Keep books on hand at all times. Bring books with you wherever you go: to the park, doctors' appointments, play dates, relatives' homes, etc. Keep them in the car, in the diaper bag, in your purse and any place else you can think of, especially around the house. Have book baskets in your children's rooms, bathrooms, the kitchen and living room.

Read to your child regularly. A study of early readers, like Elizabeth Barrett, found that their parents not only read them books but also read package labels, street signs, billboards and other reading material that they encountered throughout the day.

Give your child a bed lamp. As soon as your child is old enough to read in bed get him a night light and allow him to stay up past his bedtime to read.

Point to the words as you are reading them. The visual receptors in the brain outnumber the auditory receptors 30 to 1 and therefore the chances of a word being retained in our memory are 30 times greater if we see it instead of just hearing it.

Use books to help you deal with difficult situations. A toddler who is hitting a sibling can learn from Hands Are Not for Hitting.

Get books about topics that interest your kids. If you notice your toddler showing interest in birds, buy books about birds. If your child seems interested in fire engines get books about fire engines.

Always read the name of the author and illustrator. This helps children understand that people create books. It also gives them the opportunity to pursue other books by the same author if they like the book.

Turn off the TV. Every minute that your child sits in front of the television is a minute he is not reading, playing, exercising or being creative. Not only does TV viewing directly cut into reading time, but once exposed to television and given the choice, most kids will pick television over books. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that parents limit their children's viewing to fewer than 10 hours a week. This makes sense since an international study of children in four countries found that those who view more than 10 hours of television in one week experienced a proportional decline in their academic scores.

Breastfeeding May Cut SIDS Risk

June 13 - A new review of recent research studies shows that infants who were breastfed were about 60% less likely to die from SIDS than infants who didn't receive any breast milk. This protective effect increased the longer the baby was breastfed and if the baby was exclusively breastfed.

"Breastfeeding to any extent and of any duration is protective against SIDS," researcher Fern Hauck, MD, of the department of family medicine at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, and colleagues write in Pediatrics.

Researchers say there are many proven physical and emotional benefits of breastfeeding, but it has been unclear whether breastfeeding specifically lowers the risk of SIDS. Some studies have suggested a protective effect of breastfeeding against SIDS, while others have not.

But they say many of these studies included broader definitions of SIDS and methodological flaws that may have affected results.

In this study, researchers identified 288 studies on SIDS and breastfeeding from 1966 to 2009 and narrowed their analysis to 18 studies that met basic research quality criteria.

The results showed that for infants who received any breastmilk for any duration, the likelihood of SIDS was 60%lower. For infants who were breastfed at 2 months of age and older, the risk was 62% lower.

Exclusive breastfeeding without any use of formula for any duration appeared to provide the biggest benefits. The risk of SIDS among exclusively breastfed infants was 73% lower.

Although these findings are based on observational studies and cannot prove a direct cause and effect relationship between breastfeeding and SIDS prevention, researchers say there are several plausible biological reasons.

For example, breastfed infants may be more easily aroused from sleep than formula-fed infants at 2-3 months of age, which is within the 2-4 months peak age of SIDS cases.

In addition, breastfeeding delivers antibodies known as immunoglobulins that may help protect infants from infection during the period they are most at risk for SIDS.

Researchers say the results suggest that the recommendation to breastfeed infants should be included with other SIDS risk-reduction information given to pregnant women.

Virginia Foxx Proposes To Cut Breast-Feeding Support Funds

Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) introduced an amendment to a House spending bill yesterday that would zero out funding for a peer counseling and support program for low-income women who never learned how to breast-feed.

"All this money is being spent on salaries, benefits and cell phones for a program the federal government has no business doing," Foxx said on the during Floor debates on Wednesday.

The program is run through WIC, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, which stands to lose $686 million in total funding if the appropriations bill passes on Wednesday. In addition to providing food for low-income women, children and babies, WIC sets aside money for breast-feeding support and education through one-on-one peer counselors.

National WIC Association president and CEO Douglas Greenaway said Foxx's staff advised that "women have been doing this for millions of years and shouldn’t need any help." But WIC estimates that women who attend its breast-feeding support groups are twice as likely to plan to breastfeed as those who do not.

"Your mother may not have breast-fed, so she can't show you how to breast-feed," Greenaway told HuffPost in an interview. "Now we've got infant formula that they promote, advertise, and give away in hospitals, so we've had to use peer counselors to help moms feel comfortable and appreciate that they can breast-feed too. When they do succeed, they discover how amazing it is to be nursing a healthier child and providing the best food possible."

According to a recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, three out of four new mothers now starts out breast-feeding, but rates of breast-feeding at three and six months remained "stagnant and low" in 2010, and hospital practices and policies that interfere with breast-feeding remain common.

Rep. Foxx’s Breastfeeding Peer Counseling Amendment was defeated with a vote of 119 to 306 Wednesday afternoon. Greenaway said he couldn't estimate exactly how many women would have been affected by the loss of the breastfeeding program, but he knew the cuts would have had a great impact.

"Formula manufacturers would be delighted with this," he said.

Cara Sayer a Mum-preneur

Cara Sayer from the UK says the inspiration for the SnoozeShade came about while she was trying to keep her daughter, Holly, asleep in her pram (stroller) when they went out. She also felt Mums should not be forced into being housebound because of their baby's sleeping patterns.

How the SnoozeShade® was born

It's a cliché but it happens. I left my career in marketing to look after my lovely daughter. One day, I had an idea for a product that would help make my life as a mum easier and now over a year later, here I am, a mumpreneur with a baby product – SnoozeShade.

My daughter always needed her sleep and I needed to go out. When she was tiny, a walk to the shops in her buggy was easy as she slept deeply and often. As she got older and became more alert, it became harder for her to switch off and snooze in her buggy – or, once asleep, she would be woken by lights, the sun or by whatever activity was going on nearby.

Meeting friends for a coffee or bite to eat involved a lot of time attaching muslins with clothes pegs or draping blankets over buggy hoods and even resorting to hanging coats over the sun canopy – with varying degrees of success. Manoeuvring up and down kerbs could be treacherous too with things sliding off randomly – resulting in a wide-awake and grumpy baby.

How nice it would have been to pop into a shop and try on something new while baby slept peacefully in her pram, undisturbed by mummy twirling in front of the mirror.

Sayer searched the internet believing there must be something she can buy. She looked at mosquito, cat and insect nets, but they allowed too much light into the stroller. The current Sun shades were all big and bulky and not very portable. Plus the baby could still see out and get woken up or distracted. She couldn't find a simple answer that blocked out light and was small enough to carry with you in the stroller or diaper bag.

"One day, I rather foolishly said to a few friends that someone should invent something – so they said 'go on then'."

She spent a number of months working on the design of a blackout blind and how she would be able to sell it.

"It was either Dragons Den (BBC TV Show featuring entrepreneurs pitching their ideas) or a trade show. Of the two I thought if I went to the trade show, even if they laughed at me, at least I wouldn't be embarrassed on national television. I got everything ready and went to the show at the beginning of October, and it turned out to be really useful, I got some good feedback, and some companies were interested."

She has invested her life savings into SnoozeShade, and is hoping that not only is it a success, but it will open the door for more inventions.

Her company, Really Simple Ideas has seen profits after only a year of trading.

"It has been difficult and very busy at times. But it’s amazing how fast everything's happened.

I do most of my work when Holly is asleep or at nursery. When my husband comes home from work he is on bedtime duty so I can work."

Antonia Chitty, of the BusinessMums Conference, says Cara Sayer is proof that mothers can make it in business while bringing up children.

HEALTH ADVISORY: from County of Los Angeles Public Health

LOS ANGELES – There has been an increase in the number of meningococcal disease cases reported from different parts of Los Angeles County, with seven cases reported since mid-March. Meningococcal disease is a serious, life-threatening bacterial illness that can cause meningitis and blood infections. The Department of Public Health is monitoring the cases and is working with affected contacts to limit the spread of disease.

"The increase in cases of meningococcal disease in a short period of time is higher than expected. Last year, there were a total of 21 such cases," said Jonathan E. Fielding, MD, MPH, Director of Public Health and Health Officer. "It is important to know that the meningococcal vaccine can prevent two of the three most common types of meningococcal disease in the United States. Also, meningococcal disease can be treated with appropriate antibiotics if caught early."

Meningococcal disease is spread through close contact with an ill person’s respiratory or throat secretions, including saliva. It is not spread by casual contact or through simply breathing the same air as an ill person. Symptoms include high fever, headache, stiff neck, nausea, vomiting, skin rash, and aversion to bright lights. Suspect cases of meningococcal disease require immediate evaluation by a doctor and treatment with antibiotics.

It is recommended that all 11- and 12-year-olds receive a meningococcal conjugate vaccine, along with a booster dose between 16 and 18 years of age. Currently, less than 50 percent of children in this age group are vaccinated. Certain high-risk children from two to 10 years of age should also receive the vaccine. High-risk children include those who travel to countries where meningococcal meningitis is hyperendemic or epidemic and those with complement component deficiency or functional or anatomic asplenia.

Young adults should get vaccinated if they are planning to live in a college dormitory. Adults requiring immunizations include those who are immuno-compromised, microbiologists who are routinely exposed to meningococcal bacteria, U.S. military recruits, or those traveling to countries where the disease is common. Check with your health care provider for more information on meningococcal vaccination.

Some facts about child drownings:

Children ages 1 to 4 have the highest drowning rates.
Fatal drowning remains the second-leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children ages 1 to 14 years.
Among children ages 1 to 4 years, most drownings occur in residential swimming pools.
Most young children who drowned in pools were last seen in the home, had been out of sight less than five minutes, and were in the care of one or both parents at the time.
More than one in five people who die from drowning are children 14 and younger.
For every child who dies from drowning, another four received emergency department care for nonfatal submersion injuries.

Drowning is a preventable tragedy. It does, however, require an understanding of how children explore, learn and adapt to their environment in order to grasp the process of how a non-swimming child becomes a water safe child. Many people believe that once their child has learned to swim that he is on his way to safety. What is true however is that for a certain period of time, the risk of potential drowning for a beginner swimmer is even higher than that of a non-swimmer.

Our water safety education class will provide you with the information you need to reduce your anxiety and heighten your awareness of all the potential variables that can create drowning scenarios.

We will give you our litmus test of 5 key components that indicate a child’s level of water safety.
