Seeing the Green Flash

by Carla Shirer, MA – Pump Station Customer Service Representative

One of my favorite paintings is Raphael's The Face of an Angel (fragment of the altarpiece of the Blessed Nicholas of Tolentino). The angel's face is luminescent and I see this same serene bliss in the face of every mother that sits on the small green sofa in the lobby of The Pump Station & Nurtury™. The mother has gone without sleep and has no make up on. As she holds her baby in her arms, this love shines through.

Your child is an infant for a very short time. In a blink of an eye, your child will be off to college, getting married or joining the military. Take this time and cherish every second that you can hold and snuggle with your baby. Make a memory by closing your eyes and inhaling your baby's scent, feeling the warmth and body weight of your baby on your chest, listening to the baby's breath and funny cooing sounds, pressing the baby's feet into the palm of your hand and tracing the length of the baby’s back with your fingers. Freeze this magic moment in time because it will not last.

It is very much like seeing the "Green Flash". When you stand on the beach and the brilliant yellow sun dips behind the blue ocean and for one brief moment, the sky is emerald green. BUT if you blink, you miss this phenomena.

Don't blink. Hold your baby as much as possible and embrace this moment of unconditional love.
