See Through the Smokescreen about Sunscreen

Safe Sunscreen Awareness and Practices
Kim Walls, M.S.

Many parents know that most sun damage occurs before the age of 18 and that preventing sunburn is essential for preventing ultra-violet induced skin damage which can range from unsightly hyperpigmentation to deadly melanoma. However, many people are not aware that too much protection from the sun poses serious health risks in the form of Vitamin D deficiencies that can lead to increased risk of cancer, reduced immunity, poor bone formation, and more.

Environmental Working Group's (EWG) Top Rated Sunscreens

Episencial Sunny Sunscreen - 25% Off until 6/6/10

California Baby® No Fragrance SPF 30+ Sunscreen Lotion

California Baby® No Fragrance SPF 30+ Sunblock Stick

What Does SPF (Sun Protection Factor) Mean?
The SPF factor refers to how much longer it will take the skin to burn with a given SPF product than it would take to burn with no protection at all.

For example, Say your baby's skin is very fair and would burn after 10 minutes in the sun.
Now you use an SPF 15 product

Multliply 10 minutes by SPF 15: 10 x 15 = 150 minutes

Therefore using SPF 15 will increase the amount of time before your baby starts to burn from 10 minutes to 150 minutes or about 2 and half hours.

Remember that sunscreen wears off with sweat, water, drool, and when the skin comes in contact with clothing, food, sand, dirt and so on. If the sunscreen should provide 3 or more hours of protection, to be safe reapply the product at least every 2 hours. Also the same sunscreen on you will not last as long on your baby. Their skin is much more sensitive.

How much sun protection do children really need?
Mineral sunscreens (with the active ingredients of zinc and/or titanium) usually top out at 35. Higher SPFs usually include a chemical sunscreen ingredient.

The best SPF value depends on what you will be doing and the season. A Zinc or Titanium-based sunscreen with SPF35 is just right for playing at the beach, park, or in the back yard and is for newborn skin. Doctors recommend minimal sun exposure until at least 6 months.

Remember that a great deal of UV exposure comes from reflected light off the ground and other objects, so a hat or canopy is not quite enough protection. Lip protection is also important to apply, and reapply often, as it is quickly wiped or licked off. Keep in mind that dry or damaged skin, as you might see with eczema, should be regularly protected, even during the winter, with an SPF of 6 or more.

Creating a Healthy Sunscreen Balance -- Vitamin D and Skin Color
There is a lot of public awareness about using sunscreen, but much less is said about how sunscreen can prevent Vitamin D production and lead to serious health problems. Understanding this relationship between skin color and vitamin D production can help you make informed decisions about your family's skincare and eating routines to actively maintain health.

Teaching Kids to Care About and Even Embrace Safe Sunscreen Practices
Make sunscreen a fun, actively healthy ritual, not a rushed afterthought.
  • Don't rush them through the application process

  • Start with one body part and let them choose it

  • Make sure they see you apply your own sunscreen.

  • If your kids continue to object to sunscreen, give them the choice not to use it

    • The choice is they must stay in the shade.

  • Talk about sunburn as health risks

Baby on Board and Driving

Woman Gives Birth to Son while Driving

May 23,2010
By: Bethany Wesley, Bemidji Pioneer

Joseph Phillips ran into the North Country Regional Hospital emergency room early Wednesday morning calling for help because his newborn son was in the car with his mother. The hospital staff was perplexed when, after running outside, there was no one visible in the passenger seat. "The other side, the other side," Phillips recalled shouting, explaining that the mother and child were in the driver’s seat.

The response from the hospital staff was unanimous: "She was driving?"

The birth of Joseph Dominick Phillips will certainly be a story his parents recall for years. Amanda (Norgaard) McBride, 29, was working her usual shift at TEAM Industries in Bagley when she began to get really uncomfortable after about 11:30 p.m.

"I said, 'I gotta' go!" and ran out," Amanda said. Her due date was predicted to be between May 15-18, so the impending birth was right on time. She went and picked up Phillips, 33, and she began to drive from their home between Shevlin and Bagley to North Country Regional Hospital in Bemidji.

Amanda drove the 2005 red Chevrolet Cobalt because Phillips suffers seizures.

"It wasn’t really that bad," Amanda said of the labor pains. At about Wilton, her water broke.

"She yelled at me to grab the wheel," Phillips said. "And then, all of a sudden, I heard this little waaa (cry)." Amanda said she had managed to pull down her pants after her water broke and "...the baby just came right out" she said.

Joseph was born at 12:20 a.m. with a full head of dark hair. He weighed 8 pounds and was 18.5 inches long. Amanda held the newborn and turned on the heat in the vehicle as Phillips managed to steer them into the NCRH parking lot. Phillips did ask her if they should call 911, but Amanda was against that idea. She figured they would have to pull over and wait for ambulance in the same amount of time that it would take for them to finish the drive.

The perfect gift for every new or expectant father. Dr. Sears' Father's First Steps book includes 25 thoughtful, insightful, and helpful tips accompanied by illustrations.

A new skill for expectant father's, driving from the passengers seat? We might not want to let that one get out.

Biology Class - The Benefits of Mom's Milk

It took this student a long time but he KNEW the correct answer...

Biology Class - Final Exam

Students in an advanced Biology class were taking their mid-term exam. The last question was, "Name seven advantages of Mother's Milk," worth 70 points or none at all. One student, in particular, was hard put to think of seven advantages. He wrote:

1.) It is perfect formula for the child.
2.) It provides immunity against several diseases.
3.) It is always the right temperature.
4.) It is inexpensive.
5.) It bonds the child to mother, and vice versa.
6.) It is always available as needed.

And then, the student was stuck. Finally, in desperation, just before the bell indicating the end of the test rang, he wrote...

7.) It comes in 2 cute containers.

He got an A.

Hope you've enjoyed a little humor today. For information on the benefits of breastfeeding please click here...

Child Proofing Check List

Child Proof Basics
from Babble

Childproofing your home is an important part of keeping your kids safe. Unfortunately, with each new stage of your child's development, new dangers arise on the home front that you have to guard against. It's important to childproof each room of your house for each stage of your child's growth (see below). Your home can be a safe and healthy place for your child, but many dangers are easily overlooked.

Quick Tips from the Experts
  • Give your house a "crawl test" to check for unseen dangers.
  • Don’t call medicine "candy."
  • Always have the number for Poison Control handy
  • Keep your children from seeing you unlock doors and drawers or open safety latches. They can learn from watching you.
  • Keep dog and cat dishes away from your child’s play area.
  • Keep watch for small objects in reachable distances of your child. This includes food, buttons, and other objects kids can choke on.
  • One study shows that parents with childproofed homes don’t need to say "no" as frequently because all dangerous objects are out of reach and children are in safe play areas.

Baby Swimmers are the Best

Baby Swimmers Have Better Balance
ScienceDaily (May 7, 2010)

...Teaching babies to swim turns out to be more than just fun. Baby swimmers have better balance and are also better at grasping at things than non-swimmers. This difference persists even when children are five years old, when babies who have been taught to swim still outperform their peers, research from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) shows.

Get a cute Hooded Towel for your Swimmers from Pump Station

...The baby swimmers had participated in swimming classes for two hours a week from the age of 2-3 months until they were about 7 months old. A typical session might involve helping the baby do a somersault on a floating mat, having the baby dive under water, jump from the pool edge, and balance on the hand of a parent while reaching to pick up floating objects.

At approximately age 5, both baby swimmers and the control group were tested with similar exercises. The exercises included walking on tiptoes, balancing on one foot, skipping rope, rolling a ball into a goal and catching a beanbag. The results were crystal clear, the researchers say.

"We saw very clearly that baby swimmers were the best in exercises that related to balance and the ability to reach for things," says Sigmundsson. (Hermundur Sigmundsson, a professor of psychology at NTNU.)...

Babies Born to Dance

A new study says that rhythm and melody make babies happy.
by Heather Turgeon
April 8, 2010

...Kids love music. Lullabies and nursery rhymes are soothing and engaging, and there is even reason to think tunes are good for our little ones' health (premature babies in intensive care units have been found to gain weight faster and leave the hospital sooner when they listen to 30 minutes of Mozart a day).

Get the Classical Baby CD

...Babies may also get a dance buzz because it stimulates their "vestibular sense": the body's system for balance and movement (involving the inner ear and lower brain regions). It's our oldest sensory system, in the evolutionary sense, and it's one of the few senses that are highly developed at birth. As parents know from the early months of baby rocking, activating the vestibular sense is calming, and many think it has ties to attention and learning as well.

How to Soothe a Crying Baby

How to Soothe a Crying Baby: Mellow Motions, Gripe Water, and Other Remedies
from WebMD

Soothing sounds:
Just as loud noises like thunder or a popping balloon can make your baby cry, soothing sounds may be able to calm your infant and stop the crying. During the nine months your baby spent in the womb, she became very accustomed to the constant sound of your heartbeat. Because of this, many babies are comforted by monotonous background noise, especially sounds that mimic the sound of the womb.

You may find that your baby is comforted by listening to a white noise machine, a recording of a heartbeat, or even the whirring sounds of household appliances like dishwashers or washing machines. If there is a particular sound that seems to comfort your crying baby, consider making a recording of the sound to play when your baby is upset.

Gripe water
Gripe water is an age-old remedy for colic that was traditionally made at home using dill, bicarbonate, and alcohol. Now, most drug stores carry commercially available gripe waters that do not contain alcohol.

Get Baby's Bliss Gripe Water at The Pump Station!

Mellow motion
Many crying babies are comforted by smooth, rhythmic motion, such as being rocked in a rocking chair, hammock, or infant swing. It can also be useful to take your crying baby for a walk in a stroller or for a car ride.

Pediatrician Harvey Karp, MD, recommends using the 5 S's
The five S's include:

* swaddling
* side/stomach soothing (laying your baby on her side/stomach)
* "Shhhing" sounds
* swinging
* sucking (nursing your crying baby or give him a pacifier
