Finding a nanny – Where do I even start?

by Lindsay Heller, PsyD

It’s time to start thinking about what your childcare situation is going to look like. As a new parent you may be feeling very anxious about this process.  Where should you even start? Ask a friend? Look online? Call an agency?

You may also be feeling scared when you think about leaving your child in someone else’s care.  These are all normal fears, and they can be alleviated by becoming more informed about the process and your options.

Process. Let’s highlight that word for a moment. This is a process for both you and your baby. As you learn more information and takes steps towards choosing the best care situation for you and your family, you will become more comfortable and at ease with your child being in the care of someone other than yourself. The most important thing to remember is have patience with this process. Avoid rushing this process so that you make good, informed decisions for your baby.

Did you know?
  • While it is good to learn about the process of hiring a nanny, you don’t need to actually start your search until 3-5 weeks of your nannies start date.
  • No one regulates nanny agencies. The best way to find a great agency is to go by referral, reputation and The Association for Premier Nanny Agencies
  • Nannies are employees and legally should be paid as such. No 1099s here!
  • You can trial your candidate before deciding to hire. A typical trial is anywhere between 4 hours and 5 days.

Educate yourself!
  • Sign-up for The Nanny Class at The Pump Station & Nurtury® – this class will educate you on everything you need to know to find the right nanny for your family.
  • Look online at resources to begin to get an idea of cost and types of nannies out there.
  • Become acquainted with agencies in Los Angeles, look online, talk to friends.
  • Learn about and utilize multiple layers of safety screenings: Always obtain a background check, current DMV record, call references, trial your candidate.

You shouldn't have to sacrifice comfort to nurse.
Here are some tips and products Corky
recommends for every mom's Nursing Nook.
"I just worked with  a mom who at seven weeks post birth is still miserable nursing her little one-her back and neck are killing her (despite deep tissue massages) and her nipples are still a bit sore.

We worked a bit on deep latch and then

-I put her feet on the nursing stool
-changed to a more supportive nursing pillow
-and gave her a back rest (our back pillow).

She was thrilled and relaxed and bought all three items immediately. She also allowed me to take the pictures you see here. Nursing should be comfortable and relaxing!"
