Breastfeeding Shouldn't Hurt: Secrets of the Deep Latch

- Hold your breast with your thumb and index finger on the edge of the areola forming a "C" (football hold), or a "U" (cross cradle hold). Squeeze the finger and thumb toward each other to compress the breast. Keep your fingers off to the side forming "half a sandwich" or just "pinching an inch".
- When putting the baby to the breast, support your baby's head with one hand, thumb near one ear, third finger near the other ear, with the web of your hand at the nape of your baby's neck. Tip the head slightly backwards by lifting between your baby's shoulder blades with the heel of your hand.
- With your baby's head tilted back and chin up, lift him or her to touch your nipple. The nipple should rest just above the baby's upper lip. Wait for your baby to open very wide, then "scoop" the breast by placing the lower jaw on first. Now tip your baby's head forward and place the upper jaw well behind your nipple. Keep your thumb pressing down to form the flattened sandwich as you place your baby's upper jaw behind the nipple. The lower jaw will be more deeply positioned then the upper jaw.
- Wait several seconds, then release your breast. If your baby's nose is buried deeply in the breast, tip the head slightly so you can see your baby's nostril while the nose still touches the breast. There is no need to continue pressing the breast with your thumb.
Tips to remember:
First, all babies have receded chins. If your baby's head drops forward, he/she cannot get the lower jaw correctly positioned deeply under the areola. This results in pinched, sore, blistered, scabbed, nipples and the possibility of poor milk flow.
Second, the deep latch can be achieved with any position of the baby: "football," "cradle," or "cross-cradle" holds, but it is easier if you sit up straight and use pillows to support you and your baby.

Join the Army of Women and The Pump Station in the fight against Breast Cancer!
The Love/Avon Army of Women (AOW) is a unique program of the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit breast cancer research organization. The program is funded through a grant from the Avon Foundation for Women. The AOW provides an opportunity for men and women to take part in breast cancer research studies aimed at determining the causes of breast cancer–and how to prevent it. The AOW is a groundbreaking initiative that connects breast cancer researchers via the internet with women who are willing to participate in a wide variety of research studies. The goal of the Army of Women is to recruit ONE MILLION MEN AND WOMEN of all ages and ethnicities, including breast cancer survivors and those who have never had breast cancer.
- Men are able to sign up for the Army of Women.
- You will be signing up to be added to the Army of Women database to hear about research projects—signing up for the Army of Women does NOT sign you up for a study yet.
- The Army of Women Research Studies are prevention based, not clinical trials.
- Participants must be 18 and older—but we need ALL ethnicities—ALL ages, we need healthy women, women with cancer and women who are survivors.
- Make sure that you emphasize that there is absolutely NO COST to join and take part in something this important—we are not asking for donations, just for women to sign up and agree to hear about studies. Participation in any of our studies is ALWAYS, COMPLETELY voluntary.
- Participants will be involved in important research to discover THE CAUSE of breast cancer—how to stop it before it starts.
- You will have the ability to participate only in those projects that interest you. You can opt to decline any study invitation, or accept any invitation of their choosing.
- Learn about the current open studies
- Type of commitment: Studies will require a variety of different things (you can be asked anything from filling out an online questionnaire to being asked for a blood sample). It all varies according to study.
- After signing up for AOW, recruit your friends and family by urging them to use the "invite a friend" link: https://www.armyofwomen.org/invitefriend

Get involved, for your mother, your sister, your friend and for you!

Another reason to be sooooo glad that you are breastfeeding your baby!
Similac Recall 2010:
How to Keep Your Kids Safe
(Lot Numbers)
(CBS) In the wake of the recall of certain Similac-brand baby formulas, parents are frantically searching for details and specific lot numbers to make sure their kids are safe.
Abbott, the manufacturer, said they feared the "remote possibility" that some product may have beetles or their larvae.
"While the formula containing these beetles poses no immediate health risk, infants who consume formula containing the beetles or their larvae, could experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort and refusal to eat as a result of small insect parts irritating the GI tract," the company said in a press release. "If these symptoms persist for more than a few days, a physician should be consulted."
As of Thursday morning, Abbott's recall website was unresponsive, making it difficult for parents to figure out if they purchased recalled formula. Abbott public relations rep Melissa Brotz told CBS News that the company had expanded phone lines at their hotline to help.
Parents can call (800) 986-8850 for information.
Here's what we know.
Affected Product Lines Include
- Certain Similac powder product lines offered in plastic containers.
- Certain Similac powder product lines offered in sizes such as 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce and 12.9-ounce cans.
- Similac Advance
- Similac Advance EarlyShield
- Similac Sensitive
- Similac Isomil Advance
- Similac Sensitive Isomil Soy
- Similac Organic
- Similac Organic and Similac Advance Organic
- Similac Sensitive R.S.
- Similac Sensitive for Spit-Up
- Similac Go & Grow
- Similac Go & Grow EarlyShield
- Similac Go & Grow Soy
According to one aggregator, the following lots are included in the recall. CBS News was able to confirm the first two numbers with Abbott's website before it crashed. The manufacturer has not yet responded to confirm the other numbers.
87932T20, 88117T26, 78208T2,88136T20,91433t20,800-986-8850,800-545-5216,800-515-7677,800-986-8800,847-937-6100,(847) 935-8865,(847)935-3456,66128RB6,61251 RB6,61347RB,84314 RB,85454 T2,86580 T20,88137T20 and 90372T20
The lot number should be located on the bottom of the product. Click here for a bigger picture.
What's Not Recalled
- Similac powder formula in cans with the following letter and/or number combination in the middle of the lot number - T3 or RE or 9V or NT - are NOT being recalled.
- All Similac liquid formulas are NOT part of the recall.
- Powder and liquid specialty formulas, such as Similac Expert CareTM Alimentum?, Elecare?, Similac Expert CareTM Neosure?, Similac? Human Milk Fortifier, and metabolic formulas (for inherited disorders) are NOT part of the recall.
Abbott urges parents to send recalled products back to them at no cost. You need to call the hotline at (800) 986-8850 (24/7) or try the website at www.similac.com/recall to complete the process. Here's the full press release from the FDA's website.
